The Ascent

,Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr is an action RPG created by Neocore Games. The studio’s earlier games include titles like the well-received series The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, and also the King Arthur game series. Among others, the game was released on the PC platform.

Story

The action of Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr takes place in the rich Warhammer 40,000 universe. The players take control of the titular Inquisitor; one of the secret agents of the Emperor, whose job is to defend humanity from the heretic, mutant, demon, and the wicked forces of Chaos in general. This time, the will of the Emperor is to explore the mysterious Caligari Sector, which is located on the outskirts of the Imperium. The Sector is filled with hundreds of solar systems and thousands of planets, inhabited by various twisted creatures that deserve to be destroyed. The game is divided into special mini-campaigns, which tell their own stories, on the other hand, the “larger story” is generated over the course of the game by the whole community involved with the title.

Mechanics

The gameplay in Warhammer 40,000 Inquisitor – Martyr is presented form the isometrical perspective. The game world area, which awaits to be explored, has an open design and the locations are randomly generated. The game starts with choosing one of three available character classes: the Crusader is a powerful and very well-armed warrior, who is not a stranger to fighting many enemies at the same time, on the other hand, the Assassin uses lighter armor and a blade resembling a Japanese katana. Every character has their own skill tree, which contains active and passive abilities. Those are unlocked as the game progresses further.

The core of the game is about exploration (the players can travel on foot as well as use vehicles), doing all sorts of quests picked up on the way and fighting hordes of enemies. Players have to face the basic “cannon fodder” enemies, who are somewhat challenging opponents, and all sorts of bosses. The latter are usually larger in size than their more common colleagues, they are also much more resistant to damage and possess more significant firepower. While fighting bosses, the key to success is not only having the sufficient gear but also chipping off their armor and crippling their limbs, this strategy results in an impressive finisher animation showing the demise of the boss.

While playing the game, the players have to constantly keep an eye on the amount of ammo left, in addition, the game demands you to pay attention to the cooldown timers of your character’s abilities. Every ability has a particular cooldown time, this is also the case with healing potions, which are often helpful during combat. The enemies are controlled by an advanced AI system, which takes into account the topography of the terrain, as well as elements of the environment. Enemies – similarly to the protagonist – can both use and destroy cover, in the first case, they do this to hide from the protagonist’s attacks, and in the latter, they want to expose the player character in order to cause serious damage. Over the course of the game, the players upgrade not only their character but also the equipment they’re using, as the game features a robust crafting system.

Game modes

The core of Warhammer 40,000 Inquisitor – Martyr is the single-player story campaign. Besides that, the game features a mode called the Inquisitorial Campaign, where a maximum of four players can work together to bring the glory of the Imperium to the Caligari Sector; it’s also possible to join a clan. In addition, in this mode players can take part in special events, which enable the players to participate in unique missions. The game also offers a PvP mode, the players can build their own fortresses, which are like operating bases. They can seem fat prizes to enemy players and are prone to be attacked. The players can, therefore, be faced with the necessity to defend their bases as well as have the chance to attack the bases of others.

Technical aspects

Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr is running on a proprietary engine created by Neocore Games. The game features high-quality 3D graphics; it’s not only impressive in the character model department, but also in the detailed and polished environments, which are destructible. The music score in the game is pompous and epic.
