Tango Fiesta

A 2D shooter game played from the top-down view. The game was inspired by action films from the 1980s and the plot here constitutes a loose mixture of different movie premises and various things that happened to the protagonist, delivering a parodistic vision of the era.

Tango Fiesta for PS4, XONE and PC is a 2D shooter game played from the classic top-down view. The game makes references to action films from the 1980s and was created by Spilt Milk – an independent, London-based studio popular mainly for mobile games.

Plot

Because the game was inspired by classic action films from thr 1980s, the plot here combines themes and stories from a series of popular films together and assigns those to the game's protagonist, who is an anonymous, though probably the most dangerous man in the world – a muscle by the meaningful name of John Strong. The protagonist does not have to work alone however, because five other characters (equally sophisticated) can be accompanying him during subsequent adventures. Among them, the player will find Strong's best friend MacMillan, Bionic Cop (inspired by RoboCop), the wrongfully convicted Conchita, Dr. Henk, who is a parapsychology specialist, and an Australian called Miller – he wields a sawed-off shotgun.

Mechanics

In Tango Fiesta for PS4, XONE and PC, the player explores subsequent locations and eliminates hordes of different enemies, making use of many different weapons, including mainly a chainsaw, Molotovs, various pistols and rifles, heavy cannons, grenades, explosives and rocket launchers. Particular levels are generated procedurally and several different sceneries (fully destructible) were assigned to them, such as beaches filled with sand, a jungle in Central America, graveyards coated with gloom, a futuristic city, or even artificial mazes from the Who Wants to be a Killionaire? TV show. The player encounters here an entire mass of different enemies (regular mercenaries, robots, aliens, ghosts, demons). The game also features difficult battles against mega-bosses – those enemies were inspired by popular film characters as well.

Game modes

Although Tango Fiesta can be played solo, the game was designed in such a way that it emphasizes the co-op experience. Up to four players can enjoy the game at the same time, either online or in the local mode.

Technical aspects

Tango Fiesta for PS4, XONE and PC reaches back to aesthetics of the 1980s also in terms of the audiovisuals. Although the graphics present are not overly pixelated, all the character models and scenery elements are very simplistic and bring the arcade classics of the period into mind. Importantly however, the creators implemented support for the Steam Workshop, thus the player can design their own character for example.
