In the 1st Degree is a first-person adventure game made in the convention of a criminal drama. It uses FMV technology and video sequences recorded with live actors. The title was developed by Peter Adair and Haney Armstrong and was published by Broderbund Software.

Plot

In In the 1st Degree, we play the role of the San Francisco district prosecutor named Sterling Granger. He leads the case of James Tobin, a bold San Francisco artist accused of committing the first-degree murder and seizing the property of his business partner, with whom he ran a lucrative art gallery in the city center.

Mechanics

The game is shown in the first-person perspective and consists of two parts. In the first, we conduct a detailed investigation and, in cooperation with the police investigator Looper, we collect evidence and question potential witnesses. The second part takes place in the courtroom, where, using the collected material, we try to prove the accused of being guilty. Depending on our achievements and the details of the investigation, the trial may end in one of four ways. Tobin may be completely acquitted or convicted of 1st-degree murder, 2nd-degree murder or causing death unintentionally. The ongoing process is observed by journalists, whose comments may be an important hint for us.

Other

In the 1st Degree was created almost entirely from video materials prepared with live actors. It is worth noting that the creators were honored with the CODiE Award for the best actors work in multimedia production. The plot of the game was also the basis for a novel written by the screenwriter Domenic Stansberry who wrote it under the pseudonym Dominic Stone.
