Rollcage

GRIP for PS4, PC and etc. is a futuristic racing game by Caged Element. The production was developed as a spiritual successor of the Rollcage series; the development team consisted of many people who contributed to the creation of the aforementioned franchise.

Story

The action takes place in an unspecified time in the future and focuses on brutal racing tournaments of huge firmly-armored vehicles. The origins of this sport date back to the illegal city races from the beginning of the 21st century. As the sport grew more popular, the contestants started to increasingly modify their cars, which allowed them to reach staggering speed but also increased the risks. The authorities tried to nip this sport in the bud but failed. Ultimately, it was officially accepted, and TV stations started to transmit it on a regular basis which, in turn, allowed to drivers to earn big money and invest them in their vehicles.

Increasingly brutal competition eventually led to the introduction of heavy weapons and armor. The popularity of the sport was so high that no government dared to prohibit it. At some point, a compromise was reached and the races started to be organized in safe places—initially deserts but as the technology developed, they were moved to other planets.

Gameplay

GRIP for PS4, PC and etc. focuses entirely on racing. Our task is simply to reach the finish line as quickly as possible and in one piece. It is no easy task since the participating vehicles are armed and therefore many machines end up as flaming wreckage. What makes the game unusual is the construction of the cars — they have giant wheels which tires protrude significantly from the hood. The result is that, after reaching a certain speed, any surface can be driven on. Therefore, the racing tracks are to be considered practically tunnels.

During races, we may collect useful items which are scattered over the tracks. Some of them are armaments such as mines, rockets, or EMP bombs, while the others provide protection (for example: shields mounted on bumpers) or temporarily increase our speed. The game offers a large variety in terms of the gameplay thanks to a pretty wide selections of racing tracks (all of which are located on planets with different conditions). Moreover, cars can be additionally tuned up.

Game modes

Lone wolves can play in the career mode, in which we slowly climb up the league ladder, or try their skills in individual races. In the latter case, there are two variants: competing against AI-controlled drivers or chasing our “ghost” in time challenges. We may also play on closed arenas, which put an emphasis on combat, or the Precision mode that requires us to perform specific tasks and to show a very precise driving technique.

The game also offers a multiplayer mode in the form of individual races that have a team variant.

Technical aspects

GRIP for PS4, PC and etc. has fully 3D graphics powered by Unreal Engine 4. The soundtrack was composed by experienced artists and electronic music bands such as Full Kontakt, Kevin Greenline, Silence Groove, Technical itch, Sol Invicto, Dom & Roland, Skynet, Xtigma, Rex Mundi, and No Cure For Life.
