Developed by an independent studio – Grey Wolf Entertainment from Portugal, Dawn of Andromeda released on PC is a real-time 4X strategy kept in science-fiction realities. The game is published by Iceberg Interactive, which also put out such games as Zeno Clash, Killing Floor, Endless Space, and the StarDrive and Starpoint Gemini series.

Plot

The action is set in the distant future in the titular Andromeda galaxy which has seen better days – now it serves as a battle field for its civilisations of completely different cultures. You are in charge of one of them and your objective is to build an empire by colonising new planets, establishing relations with other fractions, conducting scientific research, and building a military fleet respected by your enemies.

Mechanics

The game follows 4X strategies core elements – exploration, expansion, exploitation, and extermination. In contrast to most of such titles, Dawn of Andromeda is a real-time strategy with an active pause available during combat.

As you progress and develop your empire, you travel through eras which feature not only higher technological development, but also unique scenarios that connect with the main theme. During gameplay you travel through a vast and dynamically-changing galaxy, meet different, randomly-generated races and civilisations that develop asymmetrically and can be on completely different technological level than you, which gives an opportunity to trade, but also brings considerable danger for your own civilisation. The game also features fights with interstellar riff-raff, pirate clans, soldiers of fortune. There are also space anomalies, like black holes, mysterious alien artefacts, and relics belonging to unknown civilisations.

The game introduces a complex army management system in which you can make use of a whole range of procedurally-generated modules and parts and create your own, unique fleet of ships. Due to advanced diplomatic options you can join various coalitions, find allies, and make enemies. However, you have to be very careful at this point, as each decision influences the shape and balance of power around the whole galaxy as well as the way your empire is perceived by other fractions. Being a true strategy game, there are multiple ways of achieving the final success and, depending on your preferences, you can focus on military development, economic domination, or diplomacy.

Game modes

Published on PC, Dawn of Andromeda features the single-player campaign exclusively.

Technical aspects

Dawn of Andromeda utilises impressive 3D visuals. The game introduces a highly intuitive user interface that that will satisfy both strategy veterans and beginners.
