Zombasite for PC is an isometric hack’n’slash RPG combining elements of fantasy with the popular zombie apocalypse theme. The title was developed by Soldak Entertainment established by Steven Peeler – a former member of Ritual Entertainment, mostly known for the SiN series. This is not the first attempt of the Americans at this genre, as they have released such warmly-received productions as Depths of Peril and Din’S Curse.

Plot

The action is set in a fantasy world in which god-playing dark elves became specialists in making the creatures of the darkness obedient to them. Witnessing the attack on a demon city perpetrated by a horde of zombies, the elves decided to harness the power of the undead and take advantage of it. However, they did not know that the zombies were awaken by a potent necromancer – Ciglio – and that he has a special spiritual link with them. Confronted with the destructive power of Ciglio, the dark elves’ magic led to a rise of a new, uncontrollable army of omnivorous parasite called Zombasite. They do not alter their targets into mindless living dead – it is a very intelligent and ruthless race which preys on both dead and living.

You assume the role of a leader of one of human clans which try to survive the zombie apocalypse. Your main concern is not limited only to fending off zombies – you also need to worry about the exhaustion of natural resources and food, which will make you either fight, or establish diplomatic contacts with the remaining survivors.

Mechanics

Similarly to the previous productions by Soldak Entertainment, Zombasite mechanically combines classic hack’n’slash elements with a range of original and unusual solutions like numerous ways of reaching goals, survival elements, diplomacy, and trade. At the beginning of the game you pick one of a few character classes (or a mixed one) and choose from +20 specialities. The game takes place in a vast, ever-changing universe – cities, monsters, items, etc. are located in different places with each start of the game. During gameplay you need to ensure your clan’s survival – gather food, establish diplomatic contacts with others, and exchange resources. Naturally, not everybody will be willing to cooperate and sometimes the only solution is war.

During gameplay you set off on a number of quests, collect useful resources and pieces of equipment, and also face hordes of zombies. However, these elements do not add up to a big, consistent plot with a predestined end. Zombasite focuses on one objective – survival. The way you achieve this depends on your individual preferences. There are four methods of finishing the game – military (kill all other clans in a given territory), diplomatic (ally with all clans), logistic (gather enough resources and food), and adventurous (finish all quests in a given territory).

Game modes

Zombasite published on PC introduces both single player and co-op. As it is a cross-platform game, users of Windows, Mac OS, and Linux can play together.

Technical aspects

Audio and visuals in Zombieland are rather ordinary – the old-school style bears a resemblance to that known from the former Soldak Entertainment productions. The action is seen from the isometric view and since the camera is not located very high, models and characters seen on the screen are rather big. The game makes up for the lack of innovative graphics with the rich content and extraordinarily low hardware requirements.
