River City: Tokyo Rumble is the English version of Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun SP: Rantou Kyousoukyoku. The title belongs to the Kunio-kun series, which has accompanied players for many years. The brand was created in 1986 and offers a variety of productions, including a crazy version of football, known as Goal 3 in Europe. The project is the responsibility of Arc System Works, the creator of the BlazBlue and Guilty Gear games.

Story

In River City: Tokyo Rumble we get to know the fate of a young boy named Kunio, who, together with his friends, takes on dangerous gangsters. The criminal organisation is closing its iron grip on Tokyo and it is up to us whether the streets of the city will once again become safe.

Mechanics

Production is a scrolled, two-dimensional beat 'em up title with RPG elements. During the game we play the characters known to the fans of the franchise, such as Kunio and Riki, and our task is to take down the encountered opponents however we can. The combat system is relatively simple and does not offer extensive combos, but instead the heroes can use a variety of everyday objects, such as balls they can kick towards the enemy, a chain or bicycles. Of course, the basic weapons are fists and legs. Traversing subsequen locations in River City: Tokyo Rumble becomes progressively harder as enemies grow in strength, but the same thing happens to our characters as well. During the game we gain experience which translates into progression of character skills. In addition, we can undertake special missions, providing money or rewarding our efforts with new special attacks.

Game modes

Although the main game mode in River City: Tokyo Rumble is the story campaign, the creators have also prepared some additional options. One of them is the Rumble mode, for up to four people (the game supports Local Play and Download Play), where we fight against our friends. In addition, we can try our hand at having fun in dodgeball.

Technical aspects

River City: Tokyo Rumble adopts the iconic graphic style that has accompanied the Kunio-kun franchise since its inception. Developers did not add too much variety, but used the lower screen of the 3DS console to display the location map.
