Mimic Arena released on PC and XONE is a local multiplayer crazy action game with platformer elements. The prototype by Tyler Edwards comes from Global Game Jam in 2013, then it was commercially fully-developed by the creator’s independent studio Tiny Horse Games.

Mechanics

Mimic Arena derives inspiration from classic, dynamic, multiplayer shooters like the Unreal Tournament series. However, the production by Tiny Horse Games is not a typical first-person shooter, but a 2D action game with platformer elements, in which players furiously fight on small levels. The key to success consists in manual abilities of players and skilful jumping on platforms in order to avoid enemies’ attacks. During combat you can use a wide range of weapons and gadgets, like discs bouncing off shots and a phase laser penetrating walls.

The unusual use of respawns is the title’s most original element. Every move during gameplay is recorded and then used for creating special clones that reflect each player’s combat tactics. If you die, the clones join the battle along your side. As there can be a number of them at the same time, you can apply quite complex tactics that require careful planning, which in the future, as the past “you,” will give you an edge.

Game modes

Published on PC and XONE Mimic Arena does not feature the single player mode – the game is meant to be played exclusively in local multiplayer by up to four players. There are three modes: Infiltration, Death Match, and Survival.

Technical aspects

The title developed by Tiny Horse Games features minimalistic visuals and concentrates primarily on the competition aspect and dynamic gameplay. Arenas are built mostly with polygonal geometric figures and they slightly resemble printed circuit boards. Neon colours dominate in the game and greyness of the arenas is peppered with bright shots and explosions effects.
