Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault for PlayStation 4 is an economical strategy game. The player is taken to a post-apocalyptic world, where humanity has locked itself in city-fortresses, protected against external threats. The game was developed by Acquire, a Japanese studio established in 1994, known from ninja-oriented series such as Way of the Samurai, Tenchu, or Shinobido. Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault debuted in 2015 on Japanese markets, but the reception was pretty weak – the game managed to get back on its feet through a release on Western markets.

Plot

Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault takes place in near future, in a world devastated by a cataclysm known as “silent apocalypse”. This vague term was used to describe an invasion of huge monsters that destroyed the Earth and decimated its population. Some humans managed to survive by hiding in city-fortresses, and now engage in uneven war with the creatures. The game offers a complex storyline, and a number of heroes that are introduced through numerous cut-scenes with an art style known from visual novels.

Mechanics

Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault for PlayStation 4 mixes a number of different genres. The game mixes RTS elements, tower defense, city building simulators, as well as arcade mechanics. The player develops his own city-fortress, and withstand continuous attacks from the huge monsters. The cities consist of a few districts of increasing size, while each area can be rotated 360 degrees. Using available resources, such as tax money or electricity, we build new objects and public utility buildings, which are transformed into turrets or rocket launchers during an emergency.

When an invasion is imminent, the players have to manipulate the individual districts so that the right weapons are aimed at a certain vulnerable type of enemy. Each siege ends with a resource boost which can be used to further develop our city.

Technical Aspects

Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault isn’t very appealing when it comes to graphics. The city and enemy models are low in detail, and are coated by low quality textures. However, the interface, as well as two-dimensional visuals improve the situation a little bit.
