Quar: Battle for Gate 18 for PS4 and PC is a turn-based strategy created by Steel Wool Games - a developer popular for the relatively well-received Flyhunter Origins.

Plot

Quar: Battle for Gate 18 for PS4 and PC is set in a fantasy world where the civilization of the titular Quar has developed over five thousand years. Those beings resemble animals with humanoid features and the path of their development was inspired greatly by human history. Quar, who initially lived in houses made of mud, developed technologies allowing them to obtain larger amounts of food, build stone walls, or craft tools necessary to survive in a hostile environment - all of that happened gradually, over time. A thriving civilization was not able to avoid internal conflicts, thus Quar have battled each other in a civil war, for seven hundred years. Alykinder's crusade carries chances to put an end to this crisis through conquering all the lands belonging to Quar. The player takes part in one of the encounters - the titular Battle for Gate 18.

Mechanics

Quar: Battle for Gate 18 is a turn-based strategy game set in a three-dimensional environment. The game is played from an isometric view, but switching to a first-person perspective is also an option. Thus the player is capable of walking aroung their base and observing the actions of the subordinates at a close distance. Gaining information about the titular creatures is facilitated by an in-game encyclopedia, known as Quarpedia. The player can learn many things about particular units here.

The singleplayer story campaign comprises more than several missions differing in terms of both the difficulty level and kind of task which has to be completed. The game offers diversity of maps - from outposts located in forests to trenches, and a great battle for the titular city. Between subsequent levels, the player returns to the base, where they have to both take care of technology allowing units to develop, and cater the soldiers. To illustrate, a workshop delivers the player with vehicle upgrades; a well-stocked cantine on the other hand, keeps the morale up.

The player has up to eighteen units at their disposal here. Among those, one will find infantry (including soldiers equipped with sniper rifles), cavalry, or armored vehicles. During military actions, the player assumes direct control over the soldiers. Depending on the task the player has to complete, different tactics have to be applied, apart from having an adequately developed army, which is equally crucial for success here.

Technical aspects

Quar: Battle for Gate 18 for PS4 and PC is a three-dimensional game offering high-quality visuals, thanks to the Unity engine. Units, buildings and other objects of the environment were created with great care for detail. This combined with the fact that the game supports VR goggles, visual impressions are very positive. Furthermore, the experience is complemented by music patterned on the sounds that cheered battles during the First World War.
