SSX (short for Snowboard Supercross) is a sports game dedicated to professional snowboarding, released as one of the PlayStation 2 starting titles. The game was developed by Electronic Arts studios and is the first EA Sports Big production dedicated to extreme sports.

Mechanics

In SSX, we take part in an exciting snowboard competition, taking place in several different, fictional locations, such as Snowdream, Elysium Alps, Tokyo Megaplex, Mesablanca or Merqury City Meltdown. The gameplay is pure arcade, and each of the available routes is filled with many ramps, rails, hills, etc. The proper use of them allows us to perform various spectacular tricks. Some of them are based on actual snowboard tricks, but the vast majority of them are tricks that wouldn't be possible in the real world. In addition, the tricks charge a special boost, which grants us a supernatural speed for a limited time.

We compete for the best time and place at the finish line, but the key to success is not only the ability to drive fast and smoothly but also to combine it with the most effective tricks. During the competition, we can forget about fair play rules and help each other e.g. by pushing opponents off the route. There are eight players from different countries, each with strengths and weaknesses, as well as a unique set of snowboard tricks. Initially, however, there are only four available, while the remaining ones are obtained by making enough progress in the game.

Game modes

SSX offers a single-player career mode as well as the option for two players to compete on one console.

Technical aspects

SSX, released on PlayStation 2, offers 3D graphics. Another thing worth mentioning is the dynamic soundtrack typical for EA sports games, which - interestingly - changes depending on the player's actions.
