Hellenica is a tactical RPG with turn-based battles. It has been developed for PC by debuting studio The Dragonloft.

Plot

The story of Hellenica is set in alternate version of ancient Greece, in which the history has been changed by invention of steam engine that started industrial revolution. We take control of warrior who is a champion of goddess Artemis, who bestowed him with power to change into a bear.

The campaign gives us a lot of freedom of shaping our story. For example, we can help Plato and Socrates bring order to Athens, ally with technology-loving king of Sparta or help Persian prince Cyrus freeing his enslaved countrymen.

Game mechanics

Hellenica for PC is based on Japanese tactical RPGs, especially Final Fantasy and Vandal Hearts series. Gameplay concentrates on turn-based battles we participate in with a team of a few heroes Aside from normal attacks and skills, developers prepared many other maneuvers using elements of surrounding, like bouncing from walls, pushing enemies from heights, throwing objects or using them for cover.

At the same time, creators offered complex skills system, all of which evolve along heroes. This prevents the occurrence of common problem in similar games, where some abilities become useless as we progress through the game.

It is noteworthy that Hellenica’s storyline takes into account player’s decisions and actions. Because of that, developers implemented a save system that lets us return to a moment before we made major decisions, meaning we can see what would change if we would act differently; we also keep some of our experience points.

Technicalities

Creators of Hellenica for PC were inspired by Final Fantasy and Vandal Hearts not only gameplay wise. Even its visuals are similar, as we observe the game’s three-dimensional maps from isometric, on which we see units in form of two-dimensional sprites. However, dialogue sequences take more from popular in Japan genre of visual novels – we watch huge, static portraits of characters on 2D background.
