FIFA 18

The game is another installment in the FIFA series. Electronic Arts introduced a lot of important changes in this follow-up and those will probably constitute a real treat for all the fans of virtual soccer. What is especially noticeable, is the introduction of the Real Players Motion technology that governs the appearances, animations and behaviours of the in-game footballers. Although this technology encompasses mainly top players, the less-known footballers also behave in a more realistic manner, as the new system takes different factors into account, such as a footballer's height. The game brings a continuation to a story campaign from FIFA 17, embodied here by The Journey: Hunter Returns. FIFA 18 also brings a remodeled system of transfers in the career. The player is now capable of negotiating with clubs and particular footballers on their own. The FIFA Ultimate Team mode brings the Icon cards representing legendary footballers. All of this is complemented by the use of the Frostbite engine, which mainly powers the cut-scenes displayed both in The Journey mode and the regular career component.

FIFA 18 for PC / Windows is another installment in the FIFA series, which is one of the most popular franchises among the sports games. This time, the fans of virtual football received a series of smaller and larger changes, including a completely remodeled system of transfers above all. The game also continues the story campaign, and the technology rendering the footballers' behaviours and appearances was improved. All the novelties were included in the PC version - this edition comes with all the contents from the versions for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and it is rather superior to what can be observed when using the other devices the game was released for.

This PC version came out in three editions. Apart from the Standard Edition, the game was released in the ICON Edition and the Ronaldo Edition. The first of the two features large Premium FIFA Ultimate Team Gold Packs and several loan players available in FUT; the latter, Ronaldo Edition, has basically the same contents, but in a smaller amount (the Gold Packs are worth half the value of their equivalents from the ICON Edition, and Ronaldo Nazario is not available as a loan player).

FIFA 18 for PC / Windows was developed by EA Canada, with support from EA Bucharest.

In 2016, the studio that has developed games belonging to the FIFA series, that is, EA Canada, introduced several large novelties into the franchise. Above all, they switched to the Frostbite engine and added a story-driven career mode known as The Journey. However, not everything turned out to be successful, as for instance, the players were not completely satisfied with how the footballers behaved on the screen. In this next installment, FIFA 18, the developer decided to fix that, using the Real Players Motion technology. Another significant change introduced in the PlayStation 4 version, is a substantially more complex system of transfers in the career - also, this mode features cut-scenes now. Another feature distinguishing this particular version from the editions for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Switch, is the presence of the Icon cards in the FIFA Ultimate Team mode. The Journey: Hunter Returns constitutes another component included here. This new follow-up in the series comes with better visuals and can be purchased in two special editions: Ronaldo and ICON.

The FIFA series constitutes one of the most popular franchises of video games. Subsequent installments of the series are annually sold in millions of copies. Electronic Arts, and to be precise - the EA Canada studio (the creators of such EA's sports franchises as NHL or Madden NFL), has developed the gameplay formula throughout subsequent installments, gradually getting closer to a realistic football simulator. FIFA 18 for Xbox One once again introduces large changes into the series, and those cannot be experienced on the previous-gen consoles or Nintendo Switch. Apart from better graphics provided by the Frostbite engine (used in the XONE, PS4 and PC versions only), the Xbox One edition utilizes the Real Players Motion technology, offers a mode The Journey: Hunter Returns, Icons in FIFA Ultimate Team, but also brings a remodeled system of transfers in the career mode. Furthermore, the giant from Redmond is an official partner of Real Madrid, whose famous footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo, cooperates with EA, though this did not result in any exclusive elements appearing only in the Xbox One edition. Microsoft advertised their console only during special events or contests that provided opportunities to win unique controllers and copies of FIFA 18.

When PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were having their debut in 2013, the FIFA series ceased to develop on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Although EA publishes the subsequent installments for the previous-generation consoles, those editions are very reduced. On PlayStation 3, FIFA 18 does not utilize the Frostbite engine, which was used in production of the versions for PCs, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This edition lacks The Journey mode and Icon cards in FIFA Ultimate Team. Furthermore, the system of transfers in the career was not changed and neither does this mode feature the cut-scenes. The only actual improvement since FIFA 17 in this PS3 edition is constituted by updated teams and changed club outfits.

FIFA 18 for Switch is a special version of this game, and this edition has a lot in common with the versions for PCs, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but nonetheless, it lacks different elements. Although this edition is far more extensive than the PS3 and X360 versions, the player will not have an opportunity to experience The Journey mode. Instead, this version for Switch features Icons in FIFA Ultimate Team, as well as the three main gameplay components, namely the Career, Kick Off, and Local Seasons modes. The player can experience the game solo or in the multiplayer mode within Local Seasons (FUT), Kick Off, Career Mode, Online Seasons, Tournaments, Women's International Cup and Skill Games. Also, the Nintendo Switch version utilizes a separate engine, which provides 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second in the stationary mode, and 720p resolution while using the console as a hand-held device.

Mechanics

FIFA 18 introduces a series of changes in relation to what FIFA 17 had to offer. The Real Players Motion technology is the largest novelty here. It is a system governing the animations of the footballers; interestingly, Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo was among those who helped to develop this technology. The system makes the virtual representations of top footballers look, move and behave practically the same way it happens in the real world. However, not only the most popular footballers are encompassed by the system, as the RPM technology takes different factors into account, such as a footballer's height or their attributes - as a result, the system affects the performances of other players. For instance, a big and strong defender almost always wins against a weaker footballer, though if the latter is well-trained, they also have chances against the opponent. Interestingly, such great and creative players as Lionel Messi are significantly better at handling the ball - they stick close to it and make a better job at feinting than the less talented footballers.

Game modes

Obviously, the game offers a series of licensed leagues and footballers. When it comes to the available game modes, many changes were introduced in this aspect as well. The story-driven career from the previous installment received a continuation here entitled "The Journey: Hunter Returns". In this mode, the player gets acquainted with further developments in the career of a promising footballer from the Premier League - Alex Hunter. This time, the campaign takes the player to different places in the world, giving an opportunity to get familiar with top footballers, such as Cristiano Ronaldo; additionally, choices made on the pitch and outside of it affect the course of this adventure.

The regular career mode (placing the player in control of one club), received certain improvements as well, concerning mainly the system of transfers. A new window appeared in the menu, and the player uses it to follow the interesting footballers. Negotiations also begin here - first, one contacts the club, then the particular footballer or their agent. In both cases, the player can do this on their own or ask for help of their assistant. During negotiations, the player sets the amount of money for the transaction and potential bonuses for the club. When discussing the terms of the contract with a particular footballer, one has to remember both about the basic payments, as well as bonuses for the scored goals, etc. The system is supervised by an artificial intelligence that dynamically reacts to the player's offers and tries to get as much as possible for its clients. Also, the career features cut-scenes now - those depict finalizations of transfers or handing the prizes for achieving the title of the footballer of the month.

Icons in the FIFA Ultimate Team mode constitute another change introduced in this installment (only in versions for XONE, PS4, PC and Switch). The Icons represent unique cards featuring legendary footballers, such as Pele, Thierry Henry or Ronaldinho. The cards come in three kinds, representing different periods in the footballers' careers. The kinds of cards differ in terms of statistics - for example, Pele from 1958 is worse at passing the ball than the same footballer from 1970.

Misc.

Cristiano Ronaldo - a representative of Portugal, and the famous player of Real Madrid, is featured on the cover of this year's edition. Moreover, the footballer cooperated with the game's developer when creating FIFA 18. A few days before its release, the game received a trial version created for subscribers to the EA Access (Xbox One) and Origin Access (PC) services.
