Mechanics

The gameplay mechanics in Sailaway: The Sailing Simulator build on exploring the seas and oceans all over the globe. The player assumes the role of a sailor aboard one of many detailed ships, including the 38-feet long Cruiser, one-man Mini-Transat, and a classic, 52-feet long cruise yacht. The developers were working hard to make each aspect of the game as realistic as possible, thus players who are new to this title should start their adventure on lower difficulty settings featuring more hints on the secrets of virtual sailing.

Higher difficulty settings force the player to take some additional factors under consideration. Seas and oceans have been developed based on real data regarding wind’s velocity and direction, water depth, as well as the wave height and the marine energy. Because of all that, the North Sea looks completely different and delivers other challenges than the Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, the developers have launched cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which resulted in creation of a system, which perfectly reflects weather conditions from different parts of the globe – this includes clouds, fogs, rainfalls, and snowfalls. The in-game realism can also be noticed at night when the Moon and the stars shine in the sky, since the constellations and other celestial bodies are arranged according to actual image of the night sky.

All the aforementioned factors allow players to draw meticulous plans of their cruises, using detailed maps. What is worth mentioning, boats travel in real time, so getting from point A to point B and covering the distance of thousands of sea miles can take months. This is why developers decided to implement the auto-sail option – while the players are away, they receive updates on the cruise via e-mail, while their avatars continue the journey.

Game modes

The gameplay in Sailaway: The Sailing Simulator features MMO elements, such as a built-in chat allowing players to communicate with each other. Nothing stands in one’s way to participate in a race, and, later on, share their achievements. Apart from that, players can invite others on their boats to get some help; it is also possible to create groups and sail with some company.

Technical aspects

Sailaway: The Sailing Simulator stands out from other PC simulators due to its high-quality 3D visuals. This game is bent to satisfy the players, especially with its variable, sometimes harsh weather conditions and detailed water animations.
