Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters

The third version of the second entry in the jRPG series from Level-5, after Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls. Players again take control of Nathan or Katie, who suffered from the attack of a mysterious Yo-kai (supernatural being). The spirit erased memories of heroes and their Yo-kai friends, forcing both characters to once again take the special watch that lets them communicate with those beings and try to find the culprit. Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters lets us revisit the city of Springdale, which we can freely explore. Gameplay focuses on performing tasks given by non-playable characters and turn-based battles against Yo-kai. Those can be befriended after defeating them to use their powers in future fights. Interestingly, players can choose one of two paths to progress the story – there are storylines and exclusive missions not present in two previous incarnations of the game. The single player campaign is accompanied by enhanced, cooperation-based multiplayer Oni Blasters Mode, as well as competitive module – players can fight each other through local wireless network.

Yo-kai 2: Psychic Specters is a third version of second entry in jRPG series created by Level-5 studio (Ni no Kuni, Rogue Galaxy) that was established in 2013. The franchise quickly became popular and received an anime series adaptation, movies and various merchandises. The second part reached the West in 2014 in two editions, with slightly different plot and unique monsters: Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls. Psychic Specters is a definitive version of the Yo-kai Watch 2, offering more Yo-kai, exclusive quests and some other additions.

Plot

Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters for Nintendo 3DS continues the story of the first game, while also adjusting it to the plot of anime series. Players again choose between Nathan and Kate, who they met during their adventure with first Yo-kai Watch. The game starts when a mysterious Yo-kai (a term from Japanese mythology used to describe various supernatural beings) erases memories of main hero or heroine, as well as those of their friendly spirits. It doesn’t take long for a protagonist to quickly get back a special watch that allows communication with those beings and decide to find the culprit.

Game mechanics

The story of Yo-kai Watch 2 takes place in a town of Springdale, which can be explored freely to search for Yo-kai hiding in various places. Psychic Specters includes all locations from previous editions and adds a completely new one, which can be accessed by special train. The game focuses on solving problem of other characters, most of the time caused by hostile Yo-kai that must be faced in turn-based battles. Winning gives players an opportunity to befriend the defeated spirit, which allows them to use its abilities.

Unlike two previous editions, Psychic Specters allows player to choose one of two paths to follow. Both offer slightly different story and Yo-kai to catch, and it should be noted that the game introduces members of the Wicked Tribe, not available in Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls. There are also plotlines that weren’t present in those editions, not to mention exclusive quests.

Game modes

One of the novelties featured in Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters for Nintendo 3DS is an enhanced cooperation mode named Oni Blasters Mode, with support of up to four players and new bosses to defeat. Players can also face each other through local wireless network.

Technical aspects

Technical side of Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters isn’t that different from previous iterations of second game. The title offers colorful and lively visuals, accompanied by joyful soundtrack.
