Night Trap – 25th Anniversary Edition for PC, XONE and etc. is a remastered edition of Night Trap, a game that originally debuted on Sega CD in 1992. The original game was developed by Digital Pictures, a studio active between 1991 and 1995. The developer specialized in games that used the, once very popular, full motion video technology. This technology featured interactive video materials with real actors. The remastered edition was developed by Screaming Villains. The developers binned the ninety minutes of original recordings and they created a new version of the interface that supports full HD resolution.

Night Trap is an important part of the video game industry history due to the impact it had on the process of creating the first formalized age classification system (ESRB, which exists to this day). During the early nineties, Night Trap and games like Mortal Kombat caused a moral panic in the United States of America. The journalists and politicians claimed that the game had a very negative impact on the morality and behavior of children, who, in their opinion, were the only people interested in playing video games. Due to the controversies, the game was withdrawn from distribution and a special commission was appointed in order to determine the fate of similar games.

Plot

The story of Night Trap – 25th Anniversary Edition starts when five young friends decide to spend a night together in the house of one of them. However, they soon discover that the Martin’s family mansion, in which they decided to stay has a history of people disappearing there. Because of that, it is constantly monitored by an organization that deals with paranormal threats. The player assumes the role of an agent who must protect the girls from the vampiric creatures known as Augers. In order to achieve their goals, the players must use traps installed in various parts of the house.

Mechanics

Night Trap – 25th Anniversary Edition for PC, XONE and etc. offers simple and approachable gameplay mechanics that weren’t changed since the original game. The player assumes the role of an agent who is sitting in the monitor room. His task is to observe the feed from eight different cameras hidden in the most important parts of the house. Whenever the player sees a monster on one of the cameras, they must activate a trap that will eliminate it – for example, a hatch in the ground or a rotating bookshelf. The game is played in real-time and each failure is permanent. If the player allows too many vampires to enter the house or if they lose one of the girls, they also lose the session and are forced to start playing from the beginning.

Technical aspects

Night Trap – 25th Anniversary Edition contains the whole cinematic material from the original version of the game. The recordings were cleaned and digitally improved so that they can be displayed in high resolutions. The title also received a completely new interface.
