Chocobo Racing is a spin-off of the Final Fantasy series, in which characters from the universe compete while driving fancy vehicles. The game is set in the universe of the popular series of jRPGs but doesn't refer to any of them story-wise.

Plot

The story of Chocobo Racing tells the story of a good-natured Chocobo and a clever Moogle who set out into the world to discover the mystery of blue crystals. During their journey, they learn the secret of the mysterious magical shards of the legendary precious stone and the extraordinary land of Fantasia. The plot of the game becomes a pretext for the next races with characters from the world of Final Fantasy. Finishing this mode allows you to unlock additional playable characters, as well as earn points to distribute into the statistics of your hero - a modified version of one of the characters.

Mechanics

Chocobo Racing is an arcade game that focuses primarily on racing. During the races, players can collect magical stones to attack competitors or increase their chances of winning with supporting spells. Individual spells have several levels, which increase with each collected stone of a given type. There are also special skills selected before a race, which are activated after filling up a special bar during the competition.

Initially, players can choose from ten characters, but the next ones are unlocked during the story mode. The creators made available such players as Chocobo, White Mage, Black Mage, Behemoth, Bahamut, Cactuar or Squall. They can compete on a total of ten tracks, referring in style to the first eight installments of the series.

Game modes

The creators have prepared five game modes. In addition to the story mode, players can also compete against another person on a split-screen and test their skills in a Time Attack. There is also a tournament option where the player faces artificial intelligence in three races, and Relay Mode where the opponent controls a relay of three selected competitors.

Technical aspects

Chocobo Racing is distinguished by its cartoon, colourful graphics. The game uses familiar characters, places and melodies from the worlds of Final Fantasy while presenting some of them in a more humorous way. The soundtrack was created by Kenji Ito, who has prepared special arrangements of songs written earlier by Nobuo Uematsu for the main series.
