Deathtrap Dungeon is a three-dimensional action adventure game released in 1998 on PS1 and PC by Eidos Interactive. It was the debut work of Asylum, a studio closed shortly after its release.

Story

The story told in the game is based on a gamebook written by Ian Livingstone, a single-player role-playing game prepared as a book. Readers could, to a limited extent, shape their own stories, most often set in fantasy settings, by means of their own decisions and dice throws. It was part of the Fighting Fantasy series, which was particularly popular in the 1990s.

The digital adaptation of Deathtrap Dungeon enables the players to take on the role of Red Lotus the amazon or Chaindog the barbarian. The chosen protagonist accepts the invitation of a mighty sorcerer and goes to a giant dungeon full of traps, at the end of which a great treasure awaits them.

Mechanics

Deathtrap Dungeon's gameplay is reminiscent of early productions from the Tomb Raider series. Selected protagonist explores vast labyrinths of underground corridors, in which numerous traps, throngs of enemies and environmental puzzles await them. During the battles it is possible to use an arsenal of melee weapons, such as swords and hammers, as well as powerful magic. While wandering through the underground, the barbarian or the amazon have to deal with a total of fifty types of enemies scattered across nine thematically different levels. Among the latter we can find sewers and a circus.
