It means that the players can experience the adventure from the vanilla game as well as its two expansions: Pillars of Eternity: The White March Part I and Pillars of Eternity: The White March Part II. Apart from that, the title was complemented with the most important updates of the core production. The gameplay itself remains unchanged, although the controls and the user interface were adjusted to work with gamepads. Complete Edition was released digitally and in retail, thanks to 505 Games.

Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition for Xbox One is a conversion of Pillars of Eternity, a 2015’s critically acclaimed RPG. The production was initially released on PC and received two expansions: Pillars of Eternity: The White March Part I and Pillars of Eternity: The White March Part II. Slightly over two years later, the project was brought to Xbox One as a kind of a GOTY edition that contains all add-ons and the most important updates. Moreover, the developers at Paradox Arctic, who developed the port, changed the controls and revamped the user interface. Everything else remains unchanged.

Pillars of Eternity

Pillars of Eternity for Xbox One is the first entirely independent production of Obsidian Entertainment. The developers decided to use all of their experience gained back in their Black Isle Studios days and create an RPG that combines the best elements or such classics as Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment and Fallout. The development team featured a number of the genre veterans, including Tim Cain (Fallout, Arcanum, Temple of Elemental Evil), Josh Sawyer (Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale II, Fallout: New Vegas), Scott Everts (Fallout, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale II, Fallout: New Vegas), Brian Menze (Planescape: Torment) and Dan Spitzley (Planescape: Torment).

The story of Pillars of Eternity is set in a vast fantasy world inhabited by people of various races and beliefs. What is interesting, despite its strongly emphasized fantasy themes, the game does not lack for firearms used by both the player’s party and their enemies. The world of Pillars of Eternity consists of several dozen various locations, including: forests, dungeons, and ancient ruins that are full of dangers and nasty surprises. We also spend a considerable amount of time visiting urban areas, for example: the city of Defiance Bay that consists of several large districts. During our travels, we meet many NPCs that give us quests to perform and, in some cases, even join the party. The game distinguishes itself by giving the players a great freedom of approach – it is only up to us whether we decide to, for example, negotiate, sneak past the guards, or storm the gate. The hallmark of Pillars of Eternity are things called “scripted interactions” – whenever the protagonist or the party has to perform an action other than standard ones, like combat or dialogue, we are presented with a separate screen that describes the situation and provides us with possible choices.

The gameplay is based on the solutions known from the classics of the genre. The developers decided to implement a real-time combat system with the active pause feature that allows the players to stop the passage of time in order to issue commands to party members. The character progression system is based on the experience we gain during our adventures, and the game offers a huge arsenal of weapons, armor, and other items to be either bought or found.

The unique feature of Pillars of Eternity is the opportunity to govern our own stronghold, which is acquired a few hours into the main story. First of all, we have to thoroughly rebuild the place in order to increase its defensive qualities and prestige. As we develop the keep, we gain access to new quests and merchants. Furthermore, the stronghold offers a number of additional activities and functions – we can imprison captured enemies, receive delegations, or send our subordinates on errands.

Pillars of Eternity: The White March Part I

Pillars of Eternity: The White March Part I is the first major expansion for Pillars of Eternity. Its story is a part of the vanilla game’s campaign, and the new adventure can be started right after the conclusion of the first act. The exploits of the player’s party have become well-known throughout the entire land. The tale of reclaiming Caed Nua reached even the distant White March, located at the foot of a grim mountain stronghold. A long time ago, the gates of the said stronghold, called Durgan’s Battery, were closed by their dwarven constructors. Several centuries later, the secrets of the Battery still remain undiscovered despite numerous daredevils trying to open the gates because the rumor has it that there are incredibly valuable artifacts to be found inside. The player’s party is also up to the challenge and travels to the eponymous White March on a mission to discover the secret of the legendary Durgan steel. Apart from the main storyline, Pillars of Eternity: The White March Part I offers quite a few side missions and an incredibly challenging location meant for the most experienced parties.

Moreover, the expansion introduces new skills and two additional companions that can be recruited into the party. The maximum experience level was increased to 14. All of the said novelties don’t change the basic gameplay elements, though. Pillars of Eternity: The White March Part I is still a classical RPG in which we explore the world, perform quests, develop characters, and fight battles. Combat takes place in real time and offers the active pause feature. The developers simply provided new content instead of changing the established gameplay foundations.

Pillars of Eternity: The White March Part II

Pillars of Eternity: The White March – Part II is the second expansion for Pillars of Eternity. In the expansion, we go back to the snowy areas of the eponymous White March, where our party came to uncover the secret of the legendary Durgan steel. The second part of the add-on continues the story that began in The White March – Part I, enriching the game world with new locations and quests. It also increases the character level capacity and unlocks new special abilities. The plot was written by the co-creators of the original game’s story: Eric Fenstermaker (also known for his work on South Park: The Stick of Truth) and Carrie Patel, the author of a popular steampunk novel series, Recolleta.

Apart from the typical add-on contents, one of the biggest novelties introduced by The White March – Part II is a new companion: a barbarian named Meneha. The developers also prepared a new game mode called Story Time which allows us to experience the extensive story of Pillars of Eternity at a faster pace.
