The Lord of The Rings Online: Mordor is the sixth expansion to the MMORPG base game, which action is set in the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Mordor add-on has been developed by Standing Stone Games - a studio mostly comprised of the former developers from the Turbine studio, which for years had been responsible for developing and supporting The Lord of the Rings Online.

Plot

This expansion takes players to Mordor, a land that remained after the destructive deeds of Morgoth and is now the residence of Sauron, who has taken the form of the Great Eye. During his adventure, a player gets to explore locations known from both the movies and the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, such as Udun Valley, The Black Gate, Barad-Dur, and Cirith Gorgor. Moreover, one has to discover the secrets of this dark land and its frightening dwellers. In this expansion, players can also travel to Erebor - a location known from a book titlet The Hobbit and the movie adaptation by the same title. In total, The Lord of The Rings Online: Mordor gives at players' disposal over three hundred new missions.

Mechanics

Mordor increases the level cap up to 115. In comparison to previous expansions, the one described herein features a higher difficulty level - nonetheless, players who stick to the main trail and do not search for additional challenges in the wild should not feel much difference.

On their adventure, players can find new legendary items as well as new artifacts. Moreover, The Lord of The Rings Online: Mordor introduces a barter system allowing players to acquire unique upgrades to their gear, even if they did not find them during e.g. a raid. This novelty has been implemented to eliminate the RNG issue (frustration resulting from the random item dropout).

Now, when creating his character, one can select the High Elves - a new race exhibiting unique skills and features. Nearly all the available character classes are compatible with the new race. The High Elves also received their own starting area.

While playing The Lord of The Rings Online: Mordor available on PC / Windows, players can modify all the elements of their characters' appearance, with the exception of their race. The expansion introduces also a new allegiance system - one can join a faction to take back the territories of Mordor in exchange for additional experience bonuses and unique pieces of gear. Each faction offers a separate set of story-related missions.

Technical aspects

Since mid-2010, the game has switched to a free-to-play business model. This means that players can enjoy it for free, however, those who want to unlock the access to the so-called 'premium content' have to utilize the optional microtransactions system.
