DreamBreak for PC and XONE is an unusual adventure game developed by the Russian Aist studio. The game is set in an alternate cyberpunk version of USSR after the Cold War.

Plot

In the PC and XONE release of DreamBreak, a player assumes the role of Jewgienij – a usual, not to say a little boring, man living in a cyberpunk Soviet city, which is under continuous invigilation of relentless security service. The main protagonist accidentally gets involved in a conspiracy linked to an unsolved murder and killer robots. Will Jewgienij be able to distinguish friend from foe, solve the mystery, and survive?

Mechanics

At first sight, DreamBreak reminds somewhat of other games such as Flashback and Another World, both of which are combinations of a platform game and a traditional point&click adventure game. In DreamBreak, depending on the platform, a player controls the main protagonist with a mouse or with a left analog stick, which makes the game more similar to the latter genre. The developers, however, have decided to implement into their game several additional mechanics and elements – a player can participate in escapes, car chases, and shootouts. The aforementioned actions require the main protagonist to use a pistol and a portable shield generator. Defeating the encountered foes is possible when a player employs different strategies. DreamBreak for PC and XONE offers only a single player mode.

Technical aspects

The retro visuals are bound to remind one of old, 8- and 16-bit productions. The developers from Aist studio have made sure to make their game more straightforward – DreamBreak features a number of facilitations aiming at minimizing the level of players’ frustration – e.g. objects, a player can interact with are marked with an orange outline to eliminate the necessity of ‘pixel hunting’ every time, a player is looking for something.
