White Noise 2

A sequel to the horror action game developed by Spanish studio Milkstone. The title focuses on asymmetric multiplayer mode. In White Noise 2 the players assume the roles of researchers-detectives who must find all recordings hidden in the game world. By doing so they will discover who or what is haunting the place. What makes the task harder is the fact that the action takes place in almost complete darkness, the players have access only to flashlights and they are followed by a terrifying monster. When playing as the monster, the player must use his abilities to kill all four detectives. The only thing that could hurt the monster is the light of the flashlight that teleports him to some distance from the victim. When playing as the detective, the player must cooperate with other players and save battery of the flashlight while avoiding the trap set by the monster. What’s interesting, after dying the player doesn’t end the game – he assumes the role of a ghost and he can help other players.

White Noise 2 is a horror action game for Xbox One. The title focuses on asymmetric multiplayer mode. It is a sequel to the simple production White Noise: A Tale of Horror that was inspired by the famous Slender and debuted during the late 2012 on Xbox Live Indie Games. A few months after its debut the original title received an improved version named White Noise Online. All titles in the series were developed by an independent studio Milkstone from Spain.

Plot

During the game the players assume the role of investigators who are trying to find all record tapes hidden in the game world. This will help them discover who or what is haunting the place. What makes the task harder is the fact that the action takes place in almost complete darkness, the players are equipped only with flashlights and they are followed by a terrifying monster.

Mechanics

The general gameplay principles of White Noise 2 for Xbox One are similar to the ones in its predecessor. When joining the game, player can assume the role of one of four investigators and he can try finding the cassettes with recordings. He can also become the monster and hunt the remaining players. When playing as the monster, the player must kill all four detectives and the only thing that threatens him is light that teleports him away from the victim. Luckily, the monster has additional special skills (for example, teleportation, light resistance or the possibility to switch places with the victim) and totems. The latter can be placed in the game world and used to cause the investigators to panic. The totems also enable the monster to see his victims through walls.

When playing as the investigator, the player has access almost only to the flashlight. In addition to lighting the way, the tool can temporarily scare away the monster. The problem is, the battery can run low very quickly and prolonged contact with the monster can cause a panic attack, making the human a perfect target. Usually being caught 2-3 times ends in death. In dire situations the player can use health kits, painkillers and a few other gadgets. What makes things interesting is the fact that death doesn’t mean the end for the player – after dying he becomes a ghost and can use new abilities to help remaining players until they win or are killed. In addition to that, by progressing in the game the player can unlock new playable characters and better flashlights, for example with better battery.

Game modes

It is possible to play White Noise 2 for Xbox One alone, but the game becomes really interesting in the asymmetric multiplayer mode for up to five players. The player that plays as monster must work alone. The remaining four investigators can (and should) join forces and together look for cassettes and deal with the monster.

Technical aspects

The graphics of White Noise 2 for Xbox One are of mediocre quality. This includes the number of details of the game world and character animations. However, the game takes advantage of its cartoonish style. The replay system, known from previous entries in the series, is an interesting addition. It enables the players to watch their sometimes funny actions after the match ends.
