Vaccine is a representative of the survival horror genre developed by the independent Spanish studio Rainy Night Creations. The source of inspiration for the developers were the classic installments of the Resident Evil series - the title draws from them in terms of plot and game mechanics, as well as visuals.

Story

In Vaccine the player takes on the role of one of the two members of a bio-hazard department. The protagonists find themselves in a mysterious property where one of them falls victim to a deadly virus. From now on, his companion's aim is to find the eponymous vaccine and apply it to their friend before it is too late, as we only have thirty minutes to complete the mission. Things are further complicated by the fact that even if the characters manages to complete the task but does not discover the mystery hidden in the house, his companion will fall ill again.

Mechanics

What distinguishes Vaccine from iconic Capcom works, is the differentiation of heroes in terms of stats, which can be further developed during the game like in an RPG. Two soldiers (Rita O'Connor and Manuel G.P.) were made available to us, and their combat potential was described using five stats - health, endurance, accuracy, determination and happiness.

We observe the action from various cinematic angles. The core of the game is the exploration of the large house, the layout of which changes every time the game starts. This makes the production highly replayable - when undertaking to find the vaccine once again, the player has to take into account the need to face different challenges. It should be remembered that the death of the lead hero forces us to start the game anew.

An important role is also played by combat - while a rat can be put down with a blow of a fist, sending a zombie or an oversized mutant to the other world requires the use of firearms (with time we acquire a pistol, and later also a much more powerful shotgun), as well as elements of the environment, even in the form of exploding barrels; the range of our capabilities is also broadened by gadgets such as mines. It is also worth noting that in order to gain access to blocked rooms, we often have to solve a puzzle, and useful information about the house is provided both in notes found along the way, as well as by NPCs we meet.

Technical aspects

Vaccine offers simple three-dimensional visuals, which resembles titles from the late nineties of the twentieth century; the same applies to the sound layer and the gloomy soundtrack.
