Unreal II: The Awakening

Unreal II brings a continuation to a classic FPS game released in 1998. The second installment was created by Legend Entertainment, and contrary to the spin-offs developed in the meantime (Unreal Tournament) it was created specifically to deliver a single player experience. The player takes on the role of John Dalton - an ex-soldier and a law enforcer, who patrols a distant sector of space aboard a vessel named Atlantis. When an interstellar war breaks out in the sector, he has to take responsibility for the colonists living there. However, the protagonist also has to find the source of the conflict and put an end to it. The player has 15 weapons at their disposal in this game - both new ones and some which appeared first in the original Unreal. 24 new kinds of enemies were added in the second installment. Contrary to the original game, subsequent missions require the player to complete various kinds of assignments. Moreover, substantially more tactical approach is required of the player.

Unreal II for PC / Windows is a sequel to one of inarguably the best action games ever created - the original Unreal belongs to the greatest classics in the history of gaming.

Plot

Although the sequel is set in the same, fictional and futuristic universe, the player is taken to places completely different to the areas visited in the original game. The player assumes the role of a new character an ex-soldier called John Dalton, currently a representative of the law (an equivalent to a Sheriff). Everything begins when the protagonist is patrolling areas in a distant sector of space, aboard a vessel named Atlantis. John is accompanied by a team of three Ne'Ban, who is the pilot, Isaak the engineer, and Aida a female special forces officer. Things get difficult when an interstellar war outbreaks. The conflict involves several alien races, armies of mercenaries, and the infamous Earth's infantry. Thrown into the midst of the war, the protagonist has to take responsibility for colonists inhabiting the sector, as well as archeologists, miners and other civilians. Finding the source of the conflict and putting an end to the war is the protagonist's additional task.

Mechanics

The player is required to complete thirteen story missions set in jungles of tropical planets, ancient ruins of a city belonging to an alien civilization, underground tunnels, unstable surfaces surrounded by volcanos, inside alien industrial installations, in the abyss of an ocean or aboard an alien spaceship. The game offers fifteen weapons, including also those from the first installment - rocket launcher, assault rifle, sniper rifle or the grenade launcher. As for the new ones, the player will find mainly the Leech Gun that slows the enemies down, Takkra, which casts deadly drones at the enemies, and a mysterious weapon powered by PSI energy, called MindClaw.

In each of the missions, the player completes tasks requiring different tactical approaches. Among different kinds of assignments, the player will be required to attack the enemy's position along with a support team, defend the base, free hostages, escort civilians or steal intelligence. The player fights different alien beings, humans or mercenaries here. In total, Unreal II for PC / Windows brings 24 new kinds of enemies. After completing a mission, the protagonist returns to Atlantis, which circles on the orbit. Here, the player can learn about the next mission, check the items obtained and talk to the other crew-members.

Unreal II for Xbox is a sequel to one of inarguably the best action games ever created - the original Unreal belongs to the greatest classics in the history of gaming. Initially, the game was released exclusively for PCs, but the Xbox version came out a year later.

It is worth adding that in case of the Xbox version, the transitions between actual, playable levels were shortened while on PCs those were highly interactive, the Xbox version replaces them with regular cut-scenes.

Mechanics

In Unreal II for Xbox, the singleplayer campaign comprises fifteen extensive levels set mainly in jungles, or inside an abandoned space-base. The game is linear and the Xbox version allows to complete the campaign in the co-op mode (split-screen). The protagonist uses more than several weapon types, such as futuristic rifles, shotguns or rocket launchers. An extensive bestiary included is also worth noticing. Some of the in-game enemies already appeared in the first installment.

Technical aspects

Unreal II for Xbox comes with slightly downgraded visuals, when contrasted with the PC release. This applies mainly to some of the in-game textures, which appear to be more blurred. The console edition gives an opportunity to participate in multiplayer battles for up to 12 players.
