Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ignis is the last of three story expansions to Final Fantasy XV, the next entry in the popular series of Japanese role-playing games developed by Square Enix. It isn’t a standalone expansion pack – similarly to Episode Gladiolus and Episode Prompto, it requires the core version of the game to work.

Plot

Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ignis for PS4 and XONE takes place during the events that occurred halfway through the core version of the game, in the city of Altissia. The players assume the role of Ignis Scientia, the royal advisor in the nation city of Lucis and one of the companions of prince Noctis, the main protagonist of Final Fantasy XV. Dramatic situation forced him to cooperate with a member of the hostile Nilfheim Empire who is trying to save his sister.

Although the expansion is strongly related to the plot of the original game, depending on player’s actions Episode Ignis can end in a few, different ways.

Mechanics

Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ignis for PS4 and XONE doesn’t introduce any major changes to gameplay. The action is presented via the third-person perspective and the gameplay is focused on exploration of open locations, and real-time combat. Instead of playing as prince Noctis, the players are controlling Ignis who previously was an NPC. The royal advisor uses magic daggers called spelldaggers that can be enchanted in various ways. He also has a unique ability to attack a few enemies simultaneously. During the game the player is accompanied by a new ally, Ravus Nox Fleuret who specializes in melee combat. The expansion lacks a character development system – Ignis doesn’t gain any experience points for defeating his enemies.

Technical aspects

The third expansion to Final Fantasy XV features same graphics as the basic version of the game. Three new tracks composed by Yasunori Mitsude (the creator of soundtrack to the cult classic Chrono Trigger) are a novelty.
