80’s Overdrive for 3DS is a racing game developed by Insane Code, an independent Polish studio responsible for a number of free-to-play mobile titles, including Birdie the Dreamer or Annoying Ball. The game, released for Nintendo 3DS, was inspired by arcade classics from 1980’s, including the cult-classic OutRun.

Mechanics

Our task is to drive one of six supercars (the authors had not been able to supply the real names of the vehicles, leaving us with placeholder names such as Penetrator GT, Intruder Turbo, or De Loan) through eight varied sceneries with a mission to defeat the opponents or to clear the route in the shortest time possible. Winning yields access to additional modifications (such as engine upgrades, new tires, brakes, or nitrous oxide) that can be used to improve our vehicles or help them fend off law enforcement (such as anti-radar device).

Game Modes

80’s Overdrive offers two basic modes. In Career Mode, the player takes part in races or escapes against law enforcement in order to climb higher in the driver rankings. Outrun Mode sees us complete timed attempts to clear the given race in the shortest time possible. Finally, we are left with a track editor that enables us to create race tracks and share them with the online community.

Technical Aspects

80’s Overdrive for 3DS was clearly inspired by retro arcade titles. The game sports pixel-art and colorful visuals, while the soundtrack offers a choice of synth/retrowave music tracks.
