Albert & Otto

Albert & Otto is an episodic platform game enriched with elements taken from logic games, developed by the independent studio K Bros Games. The source of inspiration for the devs were games such as the iconic Limbo.

Story

The main character of Albert & Otto is Albert, i.e. a boy looking for his missing sister. The protagonist, however, is not alone, as Otto, a magical rabbit with supernatural abilities, accompanies him on the expedition.

The action was set in Germany in 1939, which is reflected in the appearance of an oneiric world traversed by the protagonist, which seems to be taken out of a child's nightmare. As a curiosity, it should be added that the story in the game is not conveyed by words, but images, namely simple drawings found by Albert during the game.

Mechanics

In Albert & Otto we observe the action from the side. The game combines arcade sequences with fragments that require perceptiveness and the ability to think logically. While playing, we travel through gloomy locations, jump over platforms (avoiding the ubiquitous traps) and face the enemies, among which there are powerful bosses.

Acting in a duet, protagonists can perform double jumps, use telekinesis or even manipulate some devices; they acquire new skills in the course of the game. However, we can drop the rabbit at any time to control each character separately - Albert can only jump alone, while Otto can squeeze through gaps and press switches.

All this enables them not only to solve numerous riddles but also to eliminate their enemies - due to the fact that our charges are unable to fight, during the battles it is necessary to show ingenuity and make use of the opportunities offered by the environment. It is worth noting that the game is characterized by high level of difficulty - as the heroes die relatively often, the checkpoint system comes in handy.

Technical aspects

Despite its simplicity, the two-dimensional visuals of Albert & Otto can be enjoyed. This is primarily due to the original style and modest color palette, which evokes associations with the aforementioned work of PlayDead.
