PS4 PSV

Gintama Rumble for PS4 and PSV is a 3D action game inspired by the Samurai Warriors, and Dynasty Warriors series; the game is set in an alternative version of Japan, which has been conquered by invaders from space. Gintama Rumble was developed by Bandai Namco. The game is an adaptation of Gintama – a satiric manga by Hideaki Sorachi. The series has been constantly developed since 2003 and released in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, which is the one that has brought us such comic books as Dragonball, One Piece, My Hero Academia or Naruto. Gintama has not gained such popularity as the aforementioned titles, but it has plenty of loving fans all over the world, who appreciate both the humor present in the series and its characters. Over the years, the manga series received an anime equivalent consisting of several hundred episodes. Also, a movie based on the series came out, as well as lots of gadgets.

Plot

Gintama Rumble is set in an alternative version of the nineteenth-century Japan. The Earth has been colonized and conquered by aliens. As a result of a sudden invasion, humans and various aliens from different regions of the galaxy began to exist collectively in Tokyo, which has become a metropolis combining tradition with futuristic technology. Gintoki Sakata is the protagonist; he is a former samurai and a veteran of fightings against the aliens. Along with two friends, he runs a small company, which helps different people in need. The world presented in Gintama is a funny, satiric version of the modern-day Japan. The game also mocks classic samurai stories from the Edo period, as well as popular story cliches present in comic books, movies and TV shows.

Gintama Rumble for PS4 and PSV has two story modes. The first adapts key moments from the manga and encloses them within eight chapters of play. The other mode offers a shorter, though an original story. This latter story presents the characters as they fight for 12 magic balls that make one's wish come true – those objects appeared in Tokyo in mysterious circumstances. Additionally, the creators implemented side scenarios in the game, and those give an opportunity to familiarize oneself with the supporting characters.

Mechanics

The game's mechanics and gameplay itself resemble the Dynasty Warriors, and Samurai Warriors series (developed by Omega Force). Gintama Rumble is a 3D slasher, in which the player controls the character while observing the action from a third-person view. The player's role is to fight the enemies and bosses in a spectacular fashion. In similarity to Dynasty Warriors, the emphasis was placed on fighting dozens of adversaries at the same time. The maps are large and they depict key places from the comic books; they are divided into sectors, and the player conquers them through eliminating all the enemies present within.

Each character has their unique fighting style, as well as special attacks. The characters are described by a set of statistics – those can be developed thanks to experience points gained for completing missions. Characters serving the roles of assistants can be summoned for help at any time while fighting.

Apart from the aforementioned story modes and additional scenarios, Gintama Rumble also has a free combat mode – the player chooses their favourite character, maps and missions here.

Technical aspects

Gintama Rumble for PS4 and PSV offers colorful, three-dimensional visuals, created with use of cel shading, which brings the game closer to its anime equivalent. While playing the game, one will hear many hours of dialogues performed by actors connected to the anime series.
