Her Majesty's Ship

Her Majesty’s Ship is a simulation game in which we manage an eighteenth-century sailing ship created by Every Single Soldier studio. Developers continue the tradition of innovative games with military themes, after their quite unusual Vietnam 65 and its sequel Afghanistan’11.

Plot

Her Majesty’s Ship lets us play as an ambitious commander of the British Royal Navy. We start as a lieutenant with his own frigate and aim to get the dream promotion to a fleet admiral. The game is set in a fictional world, strongly inspired by the golden era of pirates and tropical regions of the Caribbean Sea. Sent with the mission to an insular region, we face merciless pirates and England’s sworn enemy – Spain. Lastly, the geopolitical puzzle of tropical colonies is complemented by neutral factions of Portugal and Netherlands.

Game mechanics

The game focuses on managing all aspects of commanding an independent naval unit. As the captain, we are responsible for following orders of a headquarter, keeping an eye for additional tasks (e.g. enemy’s ships to sink), taking care of his underlings and assigning them tasks: loading cannons, setting sails, repairs, navigating, steering and defending from boarding. We also must make sure there are supplies of food, rum, and ammunition, not to mention gold.

It is important to keep in mind that sailors aren’t blindly loyal to our case and abusing them will quickly lead to a rebellion and give us a plank walk experience. It is thus crucial to maintain a crew in a good condition, while constantly training soldiers will make them more efficient in battles. If we don’t fail at the beginning, the game will bring bigger ships and more difficult objectives.

Game modes

Aside from story campaign, players can rival in a multiplayer mode. Cooperating commanders just race for a position of a fleet admiral, but can still help each other. On the other hand, anything goes in a classic multiplayer variant, including PvP.

Technical aspects

Her Majesty’s Ship uses 2,5D visuals, with a ship and a crew presented in a two-dimensional form, but all models made in 3D. Graphics are very colorful, good-looking, and “soft”, focusing on a detailed recreation of ships’ interiors.
