Tobal 2 is a continuation of the warmly received fighting game titled Tobal No. 1, which was developed by DreamFactory. Officially, the game has never left Japan's borders, but after years it has been translated into English by the fans.

Mechanics

The gameplay formula in Tobal 2 is based on the solutions developed for the first installment of the series. The pillar of gameplay focuses on duels in three-dimensional arenas, where the players can use punches, kicks, and dodges, as well as launch rapid counter-attacks, grab opponents or block their blows. However, the whole thing has been expanded by the possibility of shooting fireballs; although they can damage the health of the player using this move, they deal a lot of damage to the adversary. We have a number of different players at our disposal, whose list can be increased by monsters captured in one of the game modes.

Game modes

Like its predecessor, Tobal 2 features both solo fun variants and a Versus mode where we can take on other player. Also returning is the Quest Mode, which has been significantly expanded compared to its original. This time, not only six dungeons are waiting to be visited, but also the central city, where our hero can sleep, eat, or go shopping. A character progression system has also been implemented, thanks to which we can increase the strength of the protagonist's individual limbs and increase the value of the defense stat, which enables them to face increasingly bigger threats. In addition, monsters defeated in the underground can be captured using a special crystal and used as playable fighters in Versus mode. All of this is complemented by the ability to save the game state in one of the temples.

Technical aspects

Tobal 2 works in 60 fps, and visuals of the game has improved significantly compared to the original. The character designs were once again supervised by the talented Akira Toriyama. It is worth noting that the title hit the Japanese stores on the day of the premiere of DualShock, being the first fighting game using the capabilities of this controller.
