TurtlePop: Journey to Freedom is a mix of genres containing elements seen in logic and platform games. The game was developed by Zengai, an independent team from Singapore, while the release for Nintendo Switch was handled by DigiPen Game Studios.

Plot

The story of TurtlePop: Journey to Freedom follows the exploits of the titular turtles: Bebo, Deephi, Slimmie, Smarts, Willis, and Sparky. The protagonists are supported by Genie, a flying ally. The group embarks on a mission to save their imprisoned friends and bring them safely through the exits of over a hundred levels taking place in seven varied worlds.

Mechanics

TurtlePop: Journey to Freedom is a two-dimensional match-3 game. The gameplay sees us travel through stages, jump on platforms and avoid numerous traps. Each of the heroes has access to a unique special ability – utilizing them often allows us to win the current level.

Unfortunately, you can only control a single turtle – however, there is nothing barring you from switching between them when they are close to each other, or create groups that will follow the leader. Moreover, the player receives help from Genie, who can deliver useful items or unlock a locked passageway. His abilities allow us to detonate explosives or change their colors, a mechanic used in puzzles that are inspired by match-3 games.

That is not the end of the available features, as the individual stages have been filled with coins, pearls and treasures that can be exchanged for special cards (also awarded for completing stages) which enable us to increase the battle potential of our turtles, making them more and more powerful and able to face greater dangers.

Game Modes

TurtlePop: Journey to Freedom offers both single-player and local multiplayer modes. We can choose from a cooperative mode for two players, as well as PvP modes for up to four players. The list of the available modes contain Arena Battle Crown Thief (in which we attempt to hold the titular crown as long as possible), Arena Battle Lick’em Up (in which the players attempt to lick, color, and free as many turtles as possible) and Turtle Clash Mode (the players face each other on one of 75 arenas that are unlocked along with your progress in the main campaign).

Technical Aspects

TurtlePop: Journey to Freedom offers pleasant and colorful 3D visuals that make the game viable for younger players.
