Record of Agarest Senki Zero is a continuation and prequel of the game from 2009, which debuted on the European market under the name Agarest: Generations of War. This is a tactical RPG with dating sim elements - between the battles, we go on a date with party members. As in the case of its predecessor, the game was developed by two Japanese studios: Compile Heart (branch of Idea Factory) and Red Entertainment, which are known for creating games aimed mainly at anime fans.

Plot

The game takes place one millennium before the events presented in Agarest: Generations of War and it tells a story about the fight between the forces of light and darkness. We play as Sieghart, a knight sent by the army with a mission to gain a key artifact that will change the course of the war. During his journey, he saves the life of a mysterious girl, who in return gives him a special power that can help him achieve his goal.

Mechanics

The gameplay is the same as its predecessor. We move the icon of the hero to the points located on the map. These points can mark a location, battles with enemies or plot lines. The number of targets on the map increases as the game progresses. The combat system is a traditional strategic mechanic known from other JRPGs - two-dimensional characters attack in turns and the action is presented in isometric projection. A system called Card Skill has also been added to the game. A deck of special cards defines the style and skills of the hero on the battlefield, which the player can choose and set according to their tastes and needs.

A characteristic feature of the series, which also returns in the prequel, is the multi-generational nature of the family. As we develop the hero's relationship with his companions, called Soul Breed in the game, we choose one of them to be the mother of our descendant who will fight the forces of darkness in the next generation. That new character inherits traits from both parents, which in turn will determine their statistics and skills in the game. However, unlike the previous game from the series, in which we had to play with heroes from five generations, in the Record of Agarest War Zero we play only two. The very element of establishing relations with teammates has been enriched with a system called Free Intention - this is a mode that allows us to choose a given partner and go with her on a date in the city where we are currently staying. A successful date may result in a change in the outfit of a given heroine, with whom we managed to link more closely.

Technical aspects

The graphics in Record of Agarest Senki Zero, released on the X360 platform, PC, etc., consist mostly of two-dimensional illustrations interwoven with three-dimensional locations, battlefield, and some opponents to be faced on it. The authors have implemented the effect of "live portraits", thanks to which the static illustrations of the characters have been animated, thus gaining life and personal charm.

We can also unlock locations, items and characters from the first part of the game - this requires save files files from the first game (after beating the campaign).
