Shadow Warrior (1997) PC

Shadow Warrior for PC is a game by the creators of Duke Nukem 3D, heavily based on its predecessor. It utilizes the same engine (Build) and features similar gameplay mechanics, but a completely different plot.

Plot

Lo Wang is a master assassin and a member of the Shadow Warriors clan. As one of the best of his trade, he works as a bodyguard for Zilla Enterprises, a Japanese company. Unfortunately the company's president, Master Zilla, is planning to conquer Japan with the help of malevolent creatures from “the dark side”—and to test their mettle, he sets them up against his best warrior.

Mechanics

Playing as the skilled assassin whose world just collapsed, you have to face the incoming danger. The game bears great resemblance to Duke Nukem 3D, although many elements have been changed in order to fit the story. You fight new foes with new abilities, and your weapon of choice is katana, a samurai sword, instead of guns. Like a proper Japanese warrior, you can also use the deadly throwing stars known as shurikens, as well as more standard weaponry, such as two Uzis, a modified shotgun, a powerful rocket launcher, and an impressive grenade launcher.

Technical aspects

The modified engine has been greatly upgraded, as is evident from the game's map build. The room-modeling limitations have been lifted, which allowed for creating multi-storied buildings. Shadow Warrior also features realistic fog effects, detailed graphics in SVGA mode, colored lighting and transparent water. Just like Duke Nukem 3D, it's a must-have for every FPP game fan.
