Guild Wars is an MMO cRPG. The game was developed by ArenaNet, a company founded in 2000, by people who developed titles such as Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo; they also helped to create the Battle.net service. The game distinguishes itself among other typical games from the MMORPG genre by getting rid of grinding (killing very large numbers of enemies – which sometimes can take many hours or even weeks of your time – for experience points that can be later used to develop your character), and removing the need to traverse huge distances in order to reach remote locations. Instead, the players are given access to various missions, which take place in “instance” areas (areas generated by the game for one player or a group of players), where it is possible to partake in main and side quests alike. We start the game in the chosen place (we can choose a city from the map), we join a party (or not if we prefer to play solo), and we get engaged in the dynamic gameplay.

Story

Guild Wars takes place in a fantasy world full of magic and wonder, in which the player is allowed to forge their own story by creating and playing a customized character of their choice. We can choose one of six different professions: Warrior, Ranger, Monk, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist; and use some of the hundreds of skills available. The game features only one playable race, humans.

Mechanics

The authors have prepared a large number of special missions dedicated to both those who prefer a solo playing style and those who prefer to play in groups. For the completion of individual quests, appropriate prizes are awarded, be they items (weapons, armor items, etc.) or skills. Often, to complete the mission, we are forced to fight against other players (PvP). The player guilds are the core of the game, those groups are fighting for dominance in the world of Guild Wars and the highest place in the ranking; special tournaments, competitions or huge battles of entire guilds are organized. Guilds have their own headquarters, a forum, a special channel to communicate, and an internal hierarchy.

Technical aspects

In Guild Wars the players do not have to pay for playing the game in monthly installments, as is the case in other MMORPGs. You also do not need the disc containing the game. You simply download a small installation file and run it. The software will connect to ArenaNet servers and start downloading the game. Soon, you will be in one of the cities preparing for your adventure. The game data will download automatically, this includes patches etc. The developers want to release expansions (each the size of the basic version of the game) every six or nine months, which will contain new missions, characters, races, abilities, and enemies. The expansions aren’t free of charge, but they’re not requried to play the core game.
