Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005)

The second installment of the multiplayer shooter series developed by Pandemic Studios. Once again, the players can participate in spectacular battles, where the forces of the Galactic Empire clash with the Rebel Alliance. The multiplayer mode allows up to 60 players to fight on one of 12 different planets, in the interstellar space and aboard massive space cruisers. Apart from standard infantry units, the battlefields are full of a variety of war machines – from X-wings and TIE Fighters to Star Destroyers and YT-1300 freight vessels. At some point during the playthrough, one can face the legendary Jedi Knights and the Sith Lords. Interestingly enough, players who prefer a more individual experience can also find something for themselves in this game, since Star Wars Battlefront II offers a number of non-linear missions with a well-written backstory.

Star Wars: Battlefront II is a sequel to a tactical action game – 2004’s Star Wars: Battlefront, inspired by popular productions such as Battlefield 1942 and Operation Flashpoint. Developed by Pandemic studios (who also brought us such games as Full Spectrum Warrior or the Battlezone series), Star Wars: Battlefront II features large-scale battles set in the Star Wars Universe, created by a famous filmmaker George Lucas.

Plot

The story focuses upon the war between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance. The player assumes the role of a veteran soldier who participates in a number of military undertakings. Single player mode in Battlefront II is much more extensive when compared to its predecessor - Battlefront II features a system of non-linear missions with a strong emphasis on the backstory surrounding all the depicted events.

Mechanics

The PC / Windows version of the game includes 12 different planets, among which one can find ones like Mustafar and Utapau, shown in Revenge of the Sith, third episode of the Star Wars film franchise. Another interesting feature offered by the game is the multiplayer mode, which allows up to 64 player to participate in the large-scale battles set in the Star Wars Universe. The battles take place not only on planets’ surface but also in mid-air, in the intergalactic space and inside massive star cruisers (Tantive IV – Leia’s ship, the Death Star, etc.). Apart from infantry units, one can see in action many war machines – e.g. classic X-Wings fighters, TIE Fighters, powerful Star Destroyers and YT-1300 freighters. Moreover, we get to see the legendary Jedi Knights wielding their lightsabers and using the Force, however they are not as invincible as one may expect.

Star Wars: Battlefront II is an official sequel to a 2004’s shooter Star Wars: Battlefront. This first- and third- person shooter video game resembles the iconic Battlefield series in many ways, since the gameplay focuses upon large-scale battles involving a vast amount of troops. The main difference between Battlefield and Battlefront series is, of course, the fact that Battlefront II is set in the Star Wars Universe. Savage Entertainment - also known for He-Man: Masters of the Universe - has been responsible for developing the PSP version of Star Wars: Battlefront II.

Mechanics

The PSP gameplay is somewhat similar to the gameplay featured by Battlefront II releases for other consoles. The player can choose a faction and fight the remaining one. Each faction delivers soldiers of various specialties such as snipers, medics or heavy support troops thus the choice itself plays a great part in this game. Similarly to the versions released on other platforms, Star Wars: Battlefront II for PSP offers an extensive single player mode. Battles can be fought on one of 12 large maps depicting the locations all Star Wars fans know from the movies. Soldiers controlled by the players can utilize a wide range of means of transport, among which one can find ground walkers and space fighters. Interestingly, for the first time in the series’ history the battles also take place in space.

Technical aspects

The portable edition of Star Wars: Battlefront II also offers an outright multiplayer mode, where up to 4 players can join the battles using only 1 copy of the game, thanks to the wireless communication. The visuals represent a similar quality to those featured by Star Wars: Battlefront II releases for other platforms nonetheless some simplifications were necessary.
