Prey (2006)

A science-fiction FPP shooter, known as the legendary „in-development” game from the 90s. Human Head Studios, a new developer, had taken over the project from the legendary 3D Realms. The main protagonist of Prey is Tommy, a Native American, who along with his girlfriend and granddad has been kidnapped by Aliens. After waking up on board of an alien spaceship, Tommy decides to takes matters into his own hands and destroy all aliens in his path. Along the way, he discovers further elements of the grim plot, which indicates that an alien race, Trocara, are responsible for creating all life on Earth. The game mixes fast-paced action with original atmosphere, which is mainly generated by the gigantic spaceship and its brilliantly-designed locations, where living tissue has been molded with modern technology, and by original designs of enemies, which are often hybrids of several different organisms. Id Tech 4, a graphic engine used in Doom 3, is responsible for the high-quality visuals of Prey.

Plot

Prey for Xbox 360 is a FPP action game, in which you assume the role of Tommy, an Indian, who, along with his girlfriend and granddad, gets kidnapped by aliens,. After waking onboard a massive ship, our protagonist decides to take matters into his own hands and destroy the invaders. While mowing down thousands of enemy soldiers, he discovers the further elements of a grim history which indicates that an alien race Trocara is responsible for creating life on Earth. The plot loosely alludes to Ringworld, a novel by Larry Niven.

The electronic entertainment industry first heard about Prey in 1995, when Apogee studios (later 3D Realms), having completed a shooter Rise of the Triad, had decided to prepare another product. The project was spearheaded by Tom Hall, one of the former employees of id Software, which at that time had been developing the first installment of Quake. Despite using a state-of-the-art 3D engine, and despite numerous approaches to the project, the programmers weren’t able to finalize even a basic version of the game. The development was finally abandoned in March 2000. After five years, on April 15, 2005, the development had been reactivated. Human Head Studio had taken over the new project.

Mechanics

Prey for Xbox 360 includes fast-paced action, and unconventional atmosphere. The latter is emphasized by a gigantic spaceship, which in reality is an organic creation. The tissue has been molded with technology, making a unique impression, and introducing a great variety of the game world. Human Head Studio got creative with the design of the enemies, creating terrifying creatures, often being hybrids of few different species.

Although the gameplay in Prey is mainly single player, the game also sports a multi-player mode. Doom 3 graphic engine is responsible for stunning visuals, offering all the richness of modern effects.
